Women in JOG

Competing on Equal Terms

JOG welcomes women of all experience levels — whether you’re completely new to sailing or have been racing for years. If you’re curious, motivated, and up for a challenge, you will find plenty of opportunity to race within the fleet. JOG racing embodies teamworkfair competition, shared learning, and fun and rewarding experiences with friends.

Women’s participation in JOG has steadily grown in recent years, with women now making up just under a quarter of all competitors across both the coastal and offshore series. Around 70% of competing yachts have at least one woman onboard; and 25% to 40% of yachts have a majority-female crew.

Trying something new can feel daunting, but destination racing makes those first steps easier. With JOG, the experience doesn’t stop at the finish line. Competitors come together at each destination to share a drink, swap stories and talk through how the race unfolded. It’s a chance to learn from each other, pick up tips, laugh about the tricky moments, and build friendships that you reconnect with time and again at every port.

Women’s Sailing Series

To further support women’s participation in coastal and offshore racing, and to celebrate the achievements of yachts sailing with strong female crews, JOG is proud to introduce the Women’s Sailing Series, sponsored by Nautical Cloud.

Any yacht taking part in either the coastal or offshore series will automatically be entered into the Women’s Sailing Series if they meet the minimum number of women onboard. Full details on how the Women’s Sailing Series works can be found here. As the season unfolds, results will be available to follow here.

Entering a yacht for the first time

Entering your first JOG race doesn’t have to be complicated. We’ve created a simple guide to help skippers feel confident when entering for the first time. Our Race Manager and Membership Manager are always happy to answer questions, and existing JOG owners and/or skippers are keen to support newcomers during their first season or two.

We can put you in touch with skippers sailing similar yachts or racing in the same class – there’s always a warm welcome for new faces on the start line. Seeing a new yacht racing for the first time is a pleasure, and catching up at the destination to hear how it went is even better! Looking for crew? Don’t forget to check our JOG Crew Finder!

Crewing in JOG

Whether you are new to sailing, moving from dinghies to bigger boats, or already racing inshore and curious about coastal or offshore racing, there’s a place for you as crew in JOG. Many women start competing with JOG as crew, often returning to sailing after having had children, or later in life when they are ready for a new challenge.

From short-handed coastal races to longer offshore adventures, JOG offers a supportive environment to build confidence, gain experience and see where destination sailing might take you next. Looking for a boat? Don’t forget to check our JOG Boat Finder!

Networking with other JOG Women

There are lots of ways to connect with other women in JOG. In person, the most common meeting point is the prize giving after each race — details of where we meet can be found on the race page of the programme. JOG reserves berthing for competitors, which means you will meet fellow members as you moor! If in doubt, many crews proudly fly the JOG flag and the social side of destination racing really comes to life.

Online, you can stay connected via our Instagram and Facebook pages, where JOG women are welcome to share updates, experiences and opportunities throughout the season or privately DM each other to link up.

Welfare

JOG is committed to creating a racing environment that is safe and respectful. Clear standards of behaviour apply both on and off the water, and concerns are taken seriously. More information can be found in our welfare policy.
